    This is a survey course in micro and macroeconomic issues. This course will focus on economic choices that individuals, firms, and the government make, and why they make them. It also covers the concept of scarcity and how to use economic models to better understand what is happening in our economy today. Further, this course examines the role of the firm and the impact of government intervention on markets. Finally, this course focuses on personal economic investments students can make to better prepare themselves for life in a global economy and incorporates elements of personal finance through EverFi and a post-high school project. Strong writing skills are needed for this course.

    This course covers topics from colonization to the Progressive Era in the first semester and begins with American imperialism and goes as close to present day as possible in the second semester. This course includes greater depth and detail than the US History course, while also incorporating additional primary readings, investigation of primary sources, and written essays.

    This class focuses on the regions of the world. Students study cultures, economics, world religions, and recent events that shape nations and regions. Basic geography skills are enhanced as well as an appreciation for world cultures and world events. This class focuses on the United States and world responses to various events as well as on the global economic world in which we live. A major component of the class is reflection writing and opinion-based writing samples about world events.

    This course is an interdisciplinary course in which students will examine the diversity of African American experiences through direct encounters with rich and varied sources. Students will explore key topics that extend from early African kingdoms to the ongoing
    challenges and achievements of today. Through their explorations, students will develop historical, literary, critical thinking, visual, and data analysis skills. This course is designed to be the equivalent of an introductory college course in African American Studies. As such, students should be able to read a college-level textbook and demonstrate strong writing skills.

    This course is a study of European history since 1450. Students will examine the cultural, economic, political, and social developments that play a fundamental role in shaping the world today. Through various methods, students will evaluate themes in European history, analyze historical evidence, and express a historical understanding in writing. The course will follow the Advanced Placement program, goals, and tests. This course requires high-level reading, critical thinking, and writing skills. There will be a summer assignment due the first day of class. (This class will fulfill the Eastern or Western Civilization requirement for Social Studies.)

    This AP class functions under the assumption that the student will meet the demands of a first-year college student while still in high school. Through analytical thinking, higher political awareness, and in-depth discussion, students examine roles as citizens and the functions of government. Topics are explored in greater depth and current events are used more frequently than in the American Government course.

    This course serves as an introductory college-level human geography course. Students will apply geographical skills, such as map skills, data analysis, spatial skills, graphic skills, and geographical inquiry, to grow in their understanding of human geography. Topics to be explored throughout this course include patterns and spatial organization, human impacts and interactions with their environment, and spatial processes and societal changes. Strong reading, writing, and critical-thinking skills are highly
    recommended. Additionally, if taking the AP exam, further study will be needed outside of class time.

    This course will have a heavy emphasis on microeconomic concepts, such as, the nature and function of the product and factor markets in the free enterprise system and the government's role in those markets. It will require students to understand how societies answer the basic economic questions around the allocation of scarce resources to meet the ever-changing wants and needs of its people. Elements of personal finance will also be incorporated in this course through EverFi. Strong math and writing skills are highly recommended.

    AP Psychology is designed for those students who wish to experience a university-level introductory course in psychology. This study of human behavior and mental processes will include a brief history of the field, research, personality, biology, sensation, perception, memory, consciousness, development, and social and abnormal psychology. It is a yearlong course that culminates with the opportunity to take an AP exam in May. Students will be required to read, write, and participate at a collegiate level.

    This course covers topics in American history from Colonization to Reconstruction in the first semester and begins with Westward Expansion and goes through as close to present day as possible in the second semester. Students will examine the cultural, economic, political, and social developments that have created the current condition of the United States. Through various methods, students will evaluate the principal themes in U.S. History, analyze historical evidence, and express a historical understanding in writing. The course will follow both the Advanced Placement and St. Louis University programs, goals, and assessments. This course requires high-level reading, critical thinking, and writing skills. There will be a summer assignment due the first day of class.

This class will rely heavily on the use of newspapers, current journals, the media, and other sources for current events.

    \This course is designed to build a student’s foundation for studying the non-Western societies of Eastern and Southern Asia. The course will focus on the history of India, China, Japan, Mongolia, and Korea from a topical approach. As time allows, other Asian societies and the Middle East will be addressed. The emphasis of the class will be on the historical, political, social, cultural, and religious impacts of these societies and how they have and continue to shape our world today.

    This course is an introduction to economic systems. Topics are studied from the perspective of businesses, consumers, labor, and government. Heavy emphasis is on supply and demand of market systems. This course will also include units on personal finance utilizing online learning platforms such as EverFi, Stax, and GetYourPayBack. Students work on a comprehensive project to incorporate personal finance and economic elements to create a road map for their post high school future.

The course is designed to encourage a better understanding of the continuity of the past in shaping our present world.
