Mike Guthrie ’84 was a standout wrestler at Dowling Catholic and a key contributor to the program’s tradition of excellence. During his high school career, Guthrie compiled an impressive record of 126-6-1 and was a three-time state place winner. He captured an individual state championship in 1983, a highlight of an accomplished wrestling career that included many memorable victories.
Following his time at Dowling Catholic, Guthrie continued his wrestling career at Iowa State University, where he was a member of the Cyclones’ 1987 national championship wrestling team. He later attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, earning a degree in hotel and restaurant management.
After college, Guthrie returned to the Des Moines area and worked alongside his father for more than 20 years at the family barbershop in Urbandale.
For Mike and his family, his years at Dowling Catholic were about much more than athletic accomplishments. The friendships formed through Dowling and the wrestling program became lifelong connections, and the memories shared with coaches, teammates and staff have endured through the years. While all the winning was certainly fun, it is the relationships and experiences that remain an especially meaningful part of Mike’s legacy.
