Any member or friend of the Dowling/SJA community may nominate a school graduate.  You must provide supporting evidence explaining why you feel the individual is deserving of the award.  Any information that you can provide regarding why and how the individual has distinguished themselves will help staff in the selection process. This information will be used in our publications. An individual can be nominated in the following ways:

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI


We are pleased to announce 2011 Distinguished Alumni honoree:

Fred L. Turner `51



Fred L. Turner is Honorary Chairman of McDonald's Corporation and is also a life trustee of Ronald McDonald House Charities. He retired in January 2004 as Senior Chairman and member of the board of directors of McDonald's Corporation.

Turner originally planned to be a McDonald's franchisee, but instead became one of the first employees of McDonald's Corporation in 1956.

He was elected CEO in 1973. In January 1977, Turner became Chairman and CEO, and was elevated to Senior Chairman in March 1990.

In 1990, the editors of Advertising Age magazine named him "Ad Man of the Decade" of the 80's. He also received the Horatio Alger Award in 1991.

Turner received an honorary doctor of laws degress from Drake University in 1993. He received an honorary doctor of business administration in foodservice management from Johnson & Wales University in 1991.

We recognize and honor Distinguished Alumni every year during Homecoming festivities.  A permanent plaque located near the school’s Circle Drive Lobby recognizes the Dowling Catholic’s nearly 50 Distinguished Alumni.

The Distinguished Alumni Award


Dowling initiated the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1988.  This annual award recognizes Dowling or St. Joseph graduates who have distinguished themselves and serve as positive role models for the students at Dowling Catholic High School.
 

Criteria:
An individual must have graduated from Dowling High School or St. Joseph Academy more than 10 years ago.  Individuals should be nominated and will be selected on distinction in two of the following areas:

 

  • Distinction in their professional life
  • Distinction in service to their community
  • Service as a positive and inspiring role model to young adults
  • Commitment to the Dowling/SJA community
