RAC - Reading Across the Curriculum

RAC REQUIREMENTS

Dowling Catholic High School is committed to promoting the benefits of reading. Aside from the books that are a required part of classroom work, the program requires additional reading of each student. The RAC program is being modified as outlined below.

Students in 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade (Classes of 2017, 2016, 2015 and 2014) will be required to read 2 books each year.  In the first semester, they will participate in a "book-read" program.  The school will select a book that all 9th through 11th graders will read (they will be 4 differend books) in the first semest of their school year.  Assessment of the reading and book-focused activities throughout the curriculim will occur in the Fall semester.  Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors will be required to read a 2nd RAC book of their choice (from the school's RAC list) in their 2nd semester.

Various faculty & staff will assist students in offering evidence of their reading on completion of their books.

Grading/credit will be as follows:

Students in the 9th through 12th grade will receive an "A" if they pass their 2 books each year, and a total of .25 credits each year.  They will receive an F any time they do not pass.

SINCE RAC IS A REQUIREMENT FOR GRADUATION, STUDENTS WHO DO NOT REMEDIATE A FAILED SEMESTER OF RAC WILL NOT RECEIVE THEIR DIPLOMA UNTIL THE REQUIREMENT HAS BEEN MET.

The RAC list can be found on the Dowling Catholic web page under the "Academics" link.
