Dowling Catholic Head Baseball Coach Tim O'Neill is a native of Mason City, Iowa and attended Newman Catholic High School from 1983-1987. After Newman Catholic High School, he attended North Iowa Area Community College from 1987-1989 and was a two year starter, all region and team captain. He then went to the University of Northern Iowa from 1989-1992 and served as a student assistant, coaching first base, working with infielders and assisting with recruiting.
After graduating with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Physical Education with a minor in Health Education, Coach O'Neill worked as an educator in the Catholic School system in Sioux City, Iowa for 11years from 1992-2003. During this time, his Bishop Heelan teams appeared in 4 state tournaments and won the first baseball state championship in the history of Sioux City high school baseball. He also served as Head Sophomore football coach for five years and as a varsity assistant as well as an Assistant Activities Director. He also served as an Associate Scout for the Chicago White Sox from 1997-2006.
O'Neill was named the state of Iowa coach of the year in 2001 and 2011, Iowa Sports Connection's Coach of the Year in 2011 and has won his district coach of the year eight years as well as CIML coach of the year honors in 2003, 2009, 2010 and 2011. Coach O’Neill has played or coached in ten state tournaments and has led the Maroons to 3 straight state tournament appearances. The Maroons now rank 4th all time in Iowa high school baseball history with 15 state tournament appearances. He is also one of only 2 coaches in the history of Iowa high school baseball to win a state championship at 2 different schools.
Coach O'Neill's Dowling Catholic teams have won four CIML Central championships along with two runner up finishes. Seven of his nine teams have also finished the season in the top 10 rankings. Coach O’Neill has also coached in three IHSBCA All Star Series, serving as the Head Coach twice and winning the series in 2010. In addition, Coach O’Neill has also served on the IHSBCA Board of Directors for many years. Coach O'Neill and his staff have also helped develop numerous players into the collegiate Division I, II, III, JUCO, NAIA & pro levels as well as holding successful winter and spring baseball clinics.
O’Neill has served as a Physical Education teacher at Christ the King School since 2003. His family, who reside in Clive, includes his wife Kim, Dowling Catholic Junior, Aaron, and daughter Madison, (Freshman).
